The National Commission for Schedule Castes (NCSC) issued a notice to the Karnataka Government on Thursday regarding the alleged diversion of funds designated for scheduled castes' welfare. The NCSC has requested a detailed report from the Karnataka government within seven days.
NCSC Chairman Kishor Makwana stated that the Karnataka Government’s diversion of funds meant for the welfare of scheduled castes is 'unconstitutional.' 'The National Commission for Schedule Castes has taken suo-motto cognizance of the situation and issued a notice. If the government fails to respond within the stipulated time, stricter actions will be considered,' said Makwana.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has defended the government's actions, stating that the funds are being spent on the same communities for specific purposes. He mentioned that Karnataka's policies mirror those previously implemented in Andhra Pradesh.
In February, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah presented the 2024-25 budget, emphasizing social welfare with a Rs 39,121 crore allocation under the Karnataka Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Sub-Plan scheme. This includes Rs 27,674 crore for Scheduled Castes and Rs 11,448 crore for Scheduled Tribes. Additionally, Rs 2,710 crore was allocated for constructing residential schools and hostels.
