A Tunisian judge has barred Abd Ellatif Mekki, a potential presidential candidate, from appearing in the media or traveling, a move that his party claims is intended to obstruct his candidacy ahead of the October 6 elections. Mekki’s lawyer, Monia Bouali, confirmed the restrictions, adding that Mekki is required to stay in Wardia, a neighborhood in the capital.

Opposition parties have accused President Kais Saied's government of using the judiciary to target political rivals and pave the way for Saied's re-election bid. They call for the release of imprisoned politicians and free operation of the media. Abir Moussi and Ghazi Chaouachi, two other political figures, have been in prison since last year.

While Saied’s supporters deny these allegations, stating prosecutions are related to crimes such as money laundering, new arrests like that of candidate Lotfi Mraihi further stoke the controversy. Mekki's party sees his legal troubles as a targeted attempt to undermine his campaign, especially after a court linked him to an old murder case shortly after he announced his run for office.
