The Centre’s decision to mark June 25 as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ sparked a fierce political battle on Friday. The ruling BJP stated it would remind citizens of Congress' ''dictatorial mindset''. The Congress fired back, labeling the move as another ''headline grabbing exercise in hypocrisy'' by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
JD(U), an ally of the BJP, hailed the decision as a “sign of respect” for democracy, while subtly criticizing the Congress for its ‘’undemocratic tendencies’’. In contrast, the RJD accused the Modi government of attempting to recover from electoral setbacks by making such declarations.
The controversy erupted following Union Home Minister Amit Shah's announcement that June 25, the day the Emergency was declared in 1975, would be observed as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' to honor those who suffered during that period. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP chief JP Nadda expressed their support, emphasizing the importance of remembering those who protected democratic rights during the Emergency.
