Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday heralded the significant victory of the AAP in the Jalandhar West assembly bypoll, viewing it as a clear indication of public satisfaction with the state government's performance.
The bypoll was triggered by the resignation of Sheetal Angural from the AAP, who later joined the BJP. AAP candidate Mohinder Bhagat triumphed over BJP's Angural by a remarkable 37,325 votes, bagging a total of 55,246 votes against Angural's 17,921, as reported by officials.
Congress contender Surinder Kaur secured the third position, amassing 16,757 votes.
Mann declared the landslide win a testament to the widespread approval of AAP's governance across Punjab and promised to transform Jalandhar West as pledged during the campaign. Excited celebrations erupted at Bhagat's residence in Jalandhar, with family members and party supporters celebrating the win with firecrackers, sweets, and dances to the beats of the 'dhol'. The AAP celebrated further with a victory march through Jalandhar.
This win boosts AAP's representation to 91 MLAs in the 117-member Punjab assembly. The bypoll was seen as a critical test for Chief Minister Mann, who aimed to retain this reserved constituency and counteract the party's previous poor performance in the Lok Sabha elections, where it secured only three out of 13 parliamentary seats in Punjab.
