The Pakistan government’s controversial decision to ban jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has drawn widespread criticism across the political spectrum. Stakeholders have labeled the move as undemocratic, suggesting it could have far-reaching ramifications if executed.
The government, led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party, decided to ban the PTI on charges of illegitimately receiving foreign funds, involvement in riots, and alleged anti-state activities. Treason charges have also been threatened against Khan and other key figures, including former President Arif Alvi.
The reaction has been swift; apart from the PTI, leaders from parties including the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Awami National Party, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam, and Jamaat-i-Islami have criticized the decision. PPP's leadership, particularly Information Secretary Shazia Atta Marri, distanced themselves from the contentious move, stressing that they were not consulted beforehand. The decision, announced by Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, has led to calls for invoking constitutional safeguards against unconstitutional measures.
