A recent poll indicates that nearly two-thirds of Democrats think President Joe Biden should exit the presidential race, contradicting his post-debate assertion that 'average Democrats' still support him. Conducted by the AP-NORC Centre for Public Affairs Research, the survey shows only 3 in 10 Democrats are confident in Biden's mental capacity to serve as president, down from 40% earlier this year.
The poll underscores Biden's significant challenges as he confronts calls from within his party to step down. Despite his attempts to shore up support, about 70% of Americans think he should drop out, with younger Democrats especially vocal in their dissatisfaction.
The survey also touches on the unfavourability ratings of Vice President Kamala Harris and the strong Republican support for Donald Trump following a recent debate and assassination attempt. It suggests Black Democrats remain some of Biden's staunchest supporters, while overall confidence in his ability to win the 2024 election lags behind Trump.
