Vietnam's Communist Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong has died at the age of 80, state media reported on Friday. Trong, who held the country's most powerful position for more than a decade, passed away in the early hours of the morning following an illness.

According to information from his medical team, Trong had been unwell for a period before his death. The party announced on Thursday that Vietnam's President To Lam would assume Trong's duties as he focused on medical treatment.
