Republicans Urge Biden to Step Down Amid Re-Election Withdrawal
More than a dozen Republican lawmakers have called for U.S. President Joe Biden to resign following his decision to withdraw from the 2024 re-election race. This has sparked heated debates about Biden's ability to govern, with Democrats calling the resignation demands 'ridiculous.'
More than a dozen Republicans have called on U.S. President Joe Biden to step down after he announced the end of his re-election bid. Critics argue his decision raises questions about his capability to govern.
House Speaker Mike Johnson and U.S. Senator J.D. Vance, who is Donald Trump's running mate for the Nov. 5 election, along with other lawmakers, urged the 81-year-old incumbent to resign. Biden assured in his statement that he would complete his term, which ends on Jan. 20, 2025, dismissing the calls as 'ridiculous.'
'If Joe Biden is not fit to run for president, he is not fit to serve as President. He must resign the office immediately. November 5 cannot arrive soon enough,' Johnson stated. Biden's fellow Democrats have labelled the demands as baseless.
Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin, among others, suggested invoking the 25th Amendment to remove Biden from office—a move unlikely given the president's Cabinet is composed of his appointees.
Democratic Senator Chris Coons and White House spokesperson Andrew Bates defended Biden, emphasizing his commitment to completing his term and achieving historic results for the American people, including lowering costs and creating jobs.
Republicans have persistently criticized Biden over issues like immigration and inflation, even attempting an unsuccessful impeachment.
