National Conference MP Mian Altaf Ahmad voiced strong criticism over the prolonged absence of an elected government in Jammu and Kashmir, lamenting that residents are at the 'mercy' of bureaucrats.

Speaking during a debate on the Union Budget, Ahmad argued that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman should have engaged with the people before presenting the budget for Jammu and Kashmir. His comments highlighted the lack of assembly elections in the region for the past decade.

Ahmad raised urgent concerns over delayed pensions for retired government employees, unpaid contractor bills, and the high costs of air travel between Srinagar and Delhi, adding to the difficulties faced by the region's residents. He also accused the Modi government of stripping the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences of its autonomy.
