Former West Bengal minister Biswanath Chowdhury passed away at a state-run hospital in Kolkata on Saturday morning, as confirmed by officials.

Chowdhury, an eight-term MLA known for his work with the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), had been battling cancer and was 82 years old. He was admitted to the SSKM Hospital last week and breathed his last at 6.42 am.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her grief over his demise, announcing a half-day holiday in state government offices to honor his memory. Banerjee noted their positive relationship despite political differences and conveyed her condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
