President Joe Biden on Monday introduced substantial changes for the U.S. Supreme Court, advocating for term limits and a binding code of conduct for its nine justices. The reforms, however, face tough opposition from Republicans in Congress, casting doubt on their implementation.

Biden emphasized the necessity for Congress to pass enforceable rules that would mandate justices to disclose gifts, avoid public political activities, and recuse themselves in cases of financial conflicts of interest. He also suggested an 18-year term limit to replace the current lifetime tenure for justices.

In an opinion piece in the Washington Post, Biden also called for the elimination of broad presidential immunity, particularly in light of a recent Supreme Court ruling involving former President Donald Trump. The White House remains committed to pushing through these reforms, despite significant challenges.
