Hamas Leader Assassinated in Tehran Amid Rising Tensions
Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran, as confirmed by Iran's Revolutionary Guard. Suspicion immediately fell on Israel, following prior threats against Hamas. Haniyeh's visit coincided with the swearing-in of Iran's president. The incident complicates ongoing efforts for a cease-fire between Hamas and Israel.
Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran early Wednesday, according to Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard.
While no group immediately claimed responsibility, suspicion fell on Israel, which had previously vowed to target Haniyeh following Hamas' October 7 attack that killed 1,200 Israelis and left 250 hostages.
Haniyeh was in Tehran for President Masoud Pezeshkian's swearing-in ceremony. The Revolutionary Guard is investigating the incident, with Iranian state television analysts blaming Israel. The assassination comes as the Biden administration seeks a temporary cease-fire between Hamas and Israel.
