Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas' supreme leader in exile, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Wednesday in Tehran. His death comes after the militant group’s surprise attacks on Israel on October 7.

Hamas said the airstrike hit Haniyeh's residence following his attendance at Iran's new president's swearing-in ceremony. Israel has not confirmed the strike.

Haniyeh's death is part of Israel’s continued targeting of Hamas leaders following the October 7 attacks. More than 39,000 Palestinians have died in the ensuing conflict, the deadliest and longest in Arab-Israeli history.
