Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Wednesday submitted a writ to the electoral section of the country's top court, according to state television channel VTV. The specifics of the writ's purpose were not disclosed.

Maduro, who has been in power since 2013, was declared the winner of a recent weekend presidential election. However, opposition figures allege that their candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez, received approximately 90% of the votes, significantly more than Maduro. They argue this gives Gonzalez more than double the support of Maduro.

Adding to the controversy, a major international observer condemned the election, stating it was not conducted democratically.
