In a significant disciplinary action, Jharkhand Assembly Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahato suspended 18 BJP MLAs on Thursday for 'hooliganism' and breaching the decorum of the House. The Speaker cited severe misconduct, including misbehavior with male and female marshals and unauthorized social media postings from within the House.
The controversial suspension occurred after the BJP legislators disrupted proceedings, protesting the eviction of opposition MLAs by marshals the previous day and Chief Minister Hemant Soren's refusal to address their queries. Despite multiple adjournments and assurances, the BJP members persisted in their protest, culminating in their removal by the marshals.
Speaker Mahato expressed deep dismay over the MLAs' conduct, deeming it a 'black day' in the assembly's history and against parliamentary norms. Leader of the Opposition Amar Kumar Bauri condemned the action, alleging a dictatorial regime in Jharkhand.
