Hope for Release: Marc Fogel's Continued Detainment in Russia
U.S. President Joe Biden reiterated the commitment to secure the release of Marc Fogel, a U.S. citizen serving a 14-year sentence in Russia for drug smuggling. Despite a historic prisoner exchange, Fogel's release remains uncertain. His family continues to advocate for his prioritization and release from detainment.
U.S. President Joe Biden announced on Friday that American officials remain hopeful in their efforts to secure the release of Marc Fogel, a U.S. citizen serving a 14-year prison sentence in Russia for drug smuggling.
Fogel, a 63-year-old teacher and former employee at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, was arrested in August 2021 at Sheremetyevo airport with 17 grams of marijuana, which he claimed was for medical use.
Despite the recent historic U.S.-Russia prisoner swap, Fogel's case has yet to be resolved, sparking criticisms from his family regarding the lack of prioritization.
