The united opposition in Assam on Sunday confirmed their alliance would persist through the 2026 assembly polls, contesting every election as a unified bloc, according to party leaders.
The United Opposition Forum Assam (UOFA), originally formed with 16 parties in alignment with the INDIA bloc, convened a meeting to reinforce their coalition. With the addition of two new parties, the bloc now numbers 18.
'All parties agreed to unite until the 2026 assembly elections, sacrificing individual interests to defeat the BJP,' stated Congress spokesperson Bedabrat Bora.
The coalition's immediate objective is to navigate the panchayat elections at the year's end, identified as their next significant test of strength.
CPI(M) central committee member Isfaqur Rahman highlighted internal coordination as a focus area in the meeting. 'We resolved to maintain unity until the assembly elections and enhance our collective activities. For by-elections, we will propose common candidates and work together to assure their success,' said Rahman.
Additionally, UOFA criticized the state government for failing to sufficiently address flood and erosion issues with the central government, leading to a lack of concrete action in the Union Budget.
UOFA includes Congress, TMC, AAP, Raijor Dal, AJP, CPI(M), CPI, AIFB, CPI(ML), Jatiya Dal-Asom, (U), Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (Sharad Pawar), Samajwadi Party, Purbancholio Lok Parishad (PLP), RJD, Karbi Anglong-based All Party Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC), Kamatapur Front, and Sonowal Kachari Gana Mancha.
