In a letter to the jathedar of the Akal Takht released on Monday, Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal sought unconditional forgiveness for all mistakes made during the party's reign in Punjab.
Former MP Prem Singh Chandumajra and ex-SGPC chief Bibi Jagir Kaur appeared before the jathedar on July 1, seeking forgiveness for four significant errors committed during their tenure from 2007 to 2017.
Rebel leader Gurpartap Singh Wadala demanded that Badal step down as the party chief after admitting to these mistakes. The Akal Takht Secretariat made public Badal's three-page letter, submitted to jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh on July 24.
The Akal Takht Secretariat indicated that five Sikh high priests would convene soon to address Badal's letter. Badal presented his apology after the jathedar summoned him, following allegations from rebel leaders.
A faction of the party revolted against Badal, urging his resignation as party chief after their poor performance in the Lok Sabha polls in Punjab. The rebel leaders cited four major mistakes during the Shiromani Akali Dal government, including failing to punish those responsible for the 2015 sacrilege incidents and pardoning Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in a 2007 blasphemy case.
Badal's letter declared his unwavering dedication to the Guru Granth Sahib and the Akal Takht, seeking forgiveness for all mistakes. He vowed to accept any orders from the Akal Takht with humility. He also attached a 2015 letter from his father, highlighting tragic incidents that occurred during their governance.
Incidents involving the theft of a 'bir' of the Guru Granth Sahib and sacrilegious actions led to anti-sacrilege protests in Faridkot, resulting in casualties and injuries. Wadala insisted that Badal should resign to restore the community's trust in the Akali Dal. The rebel leaders accused Badal of influencing the pardon of the Dera chief and misusing party funds for newspaper ads justifying the controversial decision.
