Bangladesh in Turmoil: President Dissolves Parliament After Student-Led Uprising
Bangladesh's president dissolved parliament and announced the formation of an interim government following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation and departure. The move came after violent student protests demanding the dissolution. Opposition leader Begum Khaleda Zia was released from house arrest. Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus is being considered for a key advisory role.
Bangladesh's president dissolved parliament on Tuesday, paving the way for an interim government and new elections. This came a day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled following a violent crackdown on a student-led uprising.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin's office also announced the release of Begum Khaleda Zia, the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader and former prime minister. The student protesters had demanded the dissolution of parliament, threatening more demonstrations.
The movement against Hasina stemmed from public outrage over job quotas reserved for families of veterans, perceived as favoring ruling party allies. Violent clashes had erupted, resulting in about 300 deaths and thousands of injuries. By Tuesday, Dhaka's streets were quiet, many businesses and schools remained closed, and the main garment factories were shuttered.
