Congress senior leader Salman Khurshid on Wednesday refused to elaborate on his controversial statement suggesting that violent protests like those in Bangladesh could occur in India. When queried by reporters, Khurshid stated, "I say whatever I say in public, never in private." However, his remarks drew severe criticism from the BJP.
BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla accused Khurshid of attempting to provoke unrest. "The Congress party claims to stand with the government on Bangladesh, yet Khurshid's comments seem to incite the people of India," Poonawalla said. He added that the Congress was prioritizing political gain over national interest, raising questions about Khurshid's intentions regarding India's democracy and armed forces.
BJP MP Sambit Patra highlighted that Khurshid's remarks were made at a book release event attended by other Congress leaders, including Shashi Tharoor, who appeared to support the statement. Patra criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for allegedly undermining India during his visits abroad. Rajya Sabha MP Dinesh Sharma accused opposition leaders of planning riots, but assured that the administration is prepared to handle any unrest. Meanwhile, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi called for the Ministry of External Affairs to maintain open communication with opposition parties to ensure information-sharing about government actions.
