Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will embark on a pivotal visit to India from August 19 to 20, accompanied by a high-level delegation. The visit is set to strengthen bilateral relations through the signing of multiple agreements, including one focused on the recruitment of Indian workers, according to sources familiar with the matter.
During the visit, Prime Minister Ibrahim will engage in extensive discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The agenda aims to boost cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, and people-to-people exchanges, marking the first visit by a Malaysian prime minister to India since 2018.
Key topics of the visit include addressing issues like illegal immigration and human trafficking, while also enhancing defence and trade relations. Malaysia ranks as India's 13th largest trade partner, and India is among the top 10 for Malaysia, with trade volumes reaching approximately USD 20 billion in 2022-23. The two countries are also working on frameworks for trading in national currencies and updating their 12-year-old comprehensive economic cooperation agreement.
