Madhya Pradesh Congress Chief Jitu Patwari on Friday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging immediate action regarding the sale and purchase of children from Madhya Pradesh in Maharashtra due to poverty, citing media reports. Patwari demanded that the central government summon the Chief Ministers of both states and take stringent measures against those involved.
According to ANI, Patwari's letter stated, 'Children are on sale in the Kanchanwadi area of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in Maharashtra, priced at Rs 25,000. These children belong to tribal families from the Khandwa district in Madhya Pradesh who went to Maharashtra for labor work. Tribal families from 11 villages in the Mundi area in Khandwa are migrating to Maharashtra and Gujarat for livelihood, but such financial desperation is forcing them to sell their children.'
The letter further revealed that many tribal laborers from Madhya Pradesh are selling their children at construction sites in Maharashtra due to severe poverty. 'The alarming practice has become a tradition among families surviving on begging due to lack of work,' it noted. Patwari criticized the inefficiency of government schemes aimed at benefiting these communities, accusing them of being mired in corruption.
Patwari pointed out that the exposure by media reports brings to light the significant hardships faced by the Dalit and tribal communities of Madhya Pradesh. He highlighted that the Madhya Pradesh government is heavily indebted and instead of addressing such critical issues, is allegedly squandering money on luxury and corrupt activities. He implored for an urgent meeting between the central government and the state chief ministers to devise effective measures to address the dire situation and hold perpetrators accountable.
