Kamala Harris Unveils Economic Proposals: Tax Cuts and Affordable Housing
Kamala Harris outlines key economic proposals focusing on tax cuts, affordable housing, and measures against price gouging. Harris aims to differentiate herself from Donald Trump on tariffs and taxes, while drawing elements from Biden's policies. However, her plans face challenges from corporations and Congress.
WASHINGTON, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, has laid out her first major economy-focused speech with proposals to cut taxes for most Americans, curb grocery price gouging, and boost affordable housing. She traveled to Raleigh, North Carolina, to outline her agenda for the first 100 days in office.
Harris aims to expand the child tax credit to $6,000 for families with newborns, cut taxes for families with children, and lower prescription drug costs. Her economic agenda, broadly mirroring Biden's, seeks to appeal to working families but may face resistance from both corporations and Congress, similar to past proposals.
Her policies on housing and groceries have been criticized as overly liberal populism by Republicans and industry groups. Although inflation has dropped below 3% for the first time in nearly 3-1/2 years, grocery prices remain high. Harris plans to introduce a federal ban on food and grocery price gouging, enforce penalties on violators, and build 3 million new housing units. She also aims to draw a clear contrast with Trump on tax policy and tariffs.
