In a significant move, U.S. President Joe Biden has approved a highly classified nuclear strategic plan reorienting Washington’s deterrent strategy towards China’s expanding nuclear arsenal, according to the New York Times.
The White House has yet to publicly confirm the approval of the revised strategy, known as the 'Nuclear Employment Guidance.' An unclassified notification is expected to be sent to Congress before Biden's term ends, as per the report. Recently, two senior administration officials have subtly referenced the strategy revision in speeches, indicating its importance.
The decision marks the first time the U.S. is specifically targeting China's nuclear capabilities in its deterrent strategy. This strategy is typically updated every four years, reflecting changing global threats. The White House did not respond to requests for comments on the matter.
