China's Biggest Auto Recall: Tesla and More Revamp Emergency Door Systems
Tesla, alongside ten other automakers, is recalling 4.3 million vehicles in China's largest automotive recall, prompted by emergency door access concerns. The country increases regulations, pushing companies to update technologies with new warning labels and software. Tesla leads with nearly 3 million recalled vehicles.
In a sweeping move on Friday, Tesla and ten other automakers initiated a recall of nearly 4.3 million vehicles in China, marking the largest automotive recall in the country's history. This action responds to fears that emergency door systems may be challenging to operate during crises.
This step comes as Beijing tightens its grip on the electric vehicle (EV) industry, instilling stricter safety measures amid fierce competition in the world's largest vehicle market. The Chinese government has also decided to phase out concealed door handles by 2027, a design popularized by Tesla and utilized by numerous domestic EV makers.
The recall encompasses a variety of responses, including installation of new warning labels and remote software updates. Tesla’s recall, the largest among the cohort, impacts 2.98 million imported and domestically manufactured models. The U.S.-based automaker plans to leverage updates that automatically modify vehicle windows post-collision, alongside adding warning labels, to address emergency door access concerns.
