BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla has attacked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging that insufficient security allowed miscreants to desecrate RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the night of August 14. Tear gas, water cannons, and lathi charges were used against protesters marching towards the West Bengal State Secretariat Nabanna on Tuesday amidst the row over the RG Kar rape and murder case.
Poonawalla accused Mamata Banerjee's government of protecting rapists, destroying evidence, and suppressing the truth, actions for which he claimed the Supreme Court and High Court have reprimanded her government. He criticized the police for arresting students and calling protesters murderers during the 'Nabanna Chalo Abhiyan' demanding justice for the victim. Poonawalla said, "Three-tier security and 6000 policemen have been deployed, but there was insufficient security at RG Kar Medical College, leading to the desecration of the crime scene and injustice to the trainee doctor."
Poonawalla questioned the silence of leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and AAP members, highlighting a lack of respect for the constitution and safety of girls. Protesters clashed with police at Howrah Bridge and Santragachi area, demanding justice amid heavy security. The brutal rape and murder of the trainee doctor on August 9 triggered nationwide outrage, leading to multiple protests and calls for justice.
