The West Bengal government on Tuesday strongly urged the public to refrain from participating in the BJP’s 12-hour general strike scheduled for August 28, pledging that the administration will ensure normalcy is maintained.
The BJP has called for the general strike, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., to protest police actions against demonstrators during a recent march to the state secretariat, ‘Nabbana’.
Chief Advisor to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Alapan Bandopadhyay, announced, “The government will not allow any bandh on Wednesday. We urge people not to participate in it. All steps shall be taken to ensure that normal life is unaffected.”
Bandopadhyay further stated that transport services will remain functional and that shops, marketplaces, and other business establishments have been instructed to stay open.
State government employees have also been encouraged to report to work. The police had previously used batons, tear gas, and water cannons to disperse protesters attempting to reach ‘Nabbana’, demanding the resignation of the CM over the rape-murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
