Congress' Inner Manipur MP, A Bimol Akoijam, urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday to ensure the safe and early release of two youths allegedly abducted by militants in Kangpokpi district recently.
In a detailed letter to Shah, Akoijam highlighted the escalating communal violence in Manipur that has continued since May 3, 2023. The conflict, involving both the Meitei and Kuki communities, has led to hundreds of deaths and numerous missing persons.
Amid this unrest, a new hostage crisis emerged on September 27, 2024, when three youths from Thoubal district—Ningombam Johnson Singh, Oinam Thoithoi Singh, and Thokchom Thoithoiba Meitei—were abducted by suspected armed Kuki militants. Although the Assam Rifles managed to rescue Ningombam Johnson Singh, the other two remain captive.
