The Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala assembly, V D Satheesan, has requested extended discussion time on the budget allocation for the welfare of scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, other backward classes, and minorities. This appeal came ahead of the debate scheduled for March 19, which currently plans to address seven requests for grants in a single day.
In a letter to Speaker A N Shamseer, Satheesan highlighted the past practice of dedicating a full day to these discussions and asked for a revision of the current schedule. He lamented that his previous suggestion went unheard, accusing the Speaker of finalizing the timetable without considering opposition input under Rule 143.
Satheesan underlined that budget cuts in allocations for backward classes and minorities require thorough debate. His strong objection was registered when the government was allegedly defensive about the allocation reductions, pressing the need for more comprehensive dialogue in the assembly sessions.
