Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar dismissed rumors of a potential leadership change, highlighting the need to bolster support for current Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and maintain party discipline. Troops have been warned against making statements about leadership, as the focus remains firmly on the 2028 elections.
The speculation of a leadership shift was reignited after party MLAs, including Iqbal Hussain and H C Balakrishna, hinted at Shivakumar ascending to the chief ministerial position later this year. Shivakumar has instructed that any discussions be refrained from, focusing on unity and discipline within the party ranks.
Persistent rumors and alleged power-sharing agreements within the Congress party, where Shivakumar could take over as CM after a rotational deal remain unconfirmed officially. Despite backing from several MLAs for Shivakumar, including over 100 showing interest in a leadership change, the matter has been quashed for now to steady party lines ahead of future elections.
