Rising Criticism of Israel's Military Actions in Gaza Among Americans

A recent poll indicates a growing number of Americans view Israel's military operations in Gaza as excessive. Conducted by AP-NORC, it shows about half of U.S. adults hold this view, a rise from previous surveys. Despite this, fewer Americans prioritize negotiating a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

A new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research reveals a shift in American public opinion regarding Israel's military actions in Gaza. The survey, conducted in mid-September, finds that about half of U.S. adults believe Israel has gone too far in its military response, an increase from 40% last year.

This change in attitudes occurs amid intensified international scrutiny of Israel's conduct, with human rights experts including those from the United Nations accusing Israel of carrying out genocide. The conflict, ignited by Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, has led to widespread devastation in Gaza, with a death toll surpassing 65,000 and a humanitarian crisis labelled as a famine by specialists.

Despite growing criticism, the survey indicates that fewer Americans, particularly Republicans, see negotiating a ceasefire as a priority for the U.S. government. The bipartisan consensus reflects increased attention on addressing the humanitarian crisis without necessarily pushing for a ceasefire. Meanwhile, support for military aid to Israel has declined, especially among Democrats.
