Tensions surged outside the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer's office on Monday as members of the BLO Adhikar Raksha Committee demonstrated, raising slogans and attempting to breach police barricades. Their actions coincided with BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari's arrival for a meeting with election officials.
The police, anticipating potential unrest, had erected multiple layers of barricades and increased the number of officers. As Adhikari's delegation entered the premises, protesters attempted to follow suit, demanding to submit their memorandum. The committee, advocating for improved conditions for booth level officers, saw participation swell, despite having minimal BLOs involved initially.
Inside, Adhikari listed demands, including removal of superannuated officials and exclusion of non-SDO rank EROs, along with voter roll revisions. Outside, heated exchanges continued, with Adhikari claiming the protests were orchestrated by the TMC. Election officials declined to comment, maintaining that their meeting proceeded unaffected.
