Hong Kong's Chief Executive John Lee raised the conviction of pro-democracy campaigner Jimmy Lai with China's President Xi Jinping during a Beijing meeting. The discussion came just a day after Lai was found guilty in a historic national security trial for colluding with foreign entities.

Lee, however, refrained from disclosing Xi's specific response. Instead, he mentioned that Xi had urged Hong Kong officials to persist in their efforts to maintain national security.

The conviction has been controversial, with Lee criticizing foreign media for allegedly misleading the public about the trial. Lai's supporters view him as a champion of freedom, though Beijing considers him an agitator encouraging U.S. sanctions against Hong Kong and mainland China.
