Brexit's Financial Future: London Lady Mayor's Stance on Regulation

The newly appointed Lady Mayor of London, Susan Langley, has emphasized the importance of Britain maintaining its regulatory independence post-Brexit, steering clear of realignment with EU financial rules. Speaking to Reuters, Langley highlighted the significance of engaging with all nations respecting the rule of law, particularly in defense matters.

As the third woman to hold this esteemed position, Langley stated that, although dialogue with the EU must continue, the UK should leverage its post-Brexit freedom by adopting regulations suiting its domestic priorities. Prime Minister Keir Starmer's cooperative stance on EU relations has rekindled the debate on closer regulatory alignment, a view not universally shared in London's financial district.

Prior to attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Langley plans to promote London's financial hub while dispelling misconceptions, notably on safety. Despite some global figures depicting London as dangerous, Langley refutes these notions, underscoring the city's strong environment for female career progression. Although she acknowledges harassment issues, she believes their extent is often exaggerated and does not endorse diversity targets in regulations.
