The Supreme Court's critical observations on the growing culture of political "freebies" before elections have sparked significant discussion. BJP leader Dilip Ghosh joined the discourse, expressing concern over the impact on development priorities. Ghosh emphasized that successive governments resort to distributing benefits to lure voters instead of prioritizing sustainable growth.
Speaking to ANI, Ghosh noted the ubiquity of this practice across states and parties. He remarked, "Prime Minister Modi has also criticized this misuse of funds meant for development. However, the tradition persists, and merely offering freebies does not guarantee electoral success." He cited examples from Delhi to illustrate the futility of such tactics when governance fails.
His comments followed a Supreme Court session led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, who flagged the potential economic pitfalls of excessive largesse. Justice Joymalya Bagchi underscored the need for transparent budget allocations, particularly for welfare schemes, stressing a nationwide relevance. Meanwhile, Ghosh opined on cinema's role, advocating for factual representation in films like 'The Kerala Story 2'.
