Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced special elections in three key districts that could be pivotal in securing a majority government for the Liberals. The elections are scheduled for April 13 and include the Toronto-area districts of Scarborough Southwest, University-Rosedale, and the Montreal-area riding of Terrebonne.
The Toronto districts are considered safe wins for the Liberals, while the outcome in Terrebonne is less certain. The Liberals currently hold 169 seats in the House of Commons, needing just three more to achieve a majority, which would allow them to pass legislation without the need for support from opposition parties.
Carney has shifted the Liberals to a more centrist position since succeeding Justin Trudeau in 2025. The Supreme Court recently annulled the Liberals' previous victory in Terrebonne, prompting this special election round. The outcomes of these votes are crucial for Carney's leadership and the party's legislative agenda.
