Crisis in Tura: Meghalaya CM's Resilient Visit Amid Turmoil

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and his wife visited violence-hit Tura to assess the situation amid curfews and internet outages. Protests erupted over Garo Hills elections, leading to unrest and postponement of elections. The CM is working with officials to restore peace and normalcy.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, accompanied by his wife Mehtab Chandee A. Sangma, toured several areas in Tura to assess the on-ground situation following incidents of violence. Despite the curfew and internet shutdown in parts of the West Garo Hills district, the Chief Minister aimed to reassure residents of ongoing efforts to restore peace.

The unrest, fueled by protests over the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council elections, led to two deaths in police firing. In response to the violence, Sangma has postponed the elections initially set for April 10, aiming to achieve a stable environment first.

Amidst security concerns, the Chief Minister opted to stay in Tura, highlighting his commitment to the region amidst threats. The administration continues to work closely with defense forces to ensure peace is reinstated across the affected areas of the Garo Hills.
