The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in Kerala has expelled long-serving member T K Govindan. This follows his decision to contest as an independent from the Taliparamba constituency, a CPI-M stronghold, after the party chose the state secretary's wife, P K Shyamala, as candidate.

At a press conference, CPI(M) Kannur district secretary K K Ragesh termed Govindan's actions as ''anti-party activities.'' He highlighted that the selection of Shyamala was based on her organisational experience rather than kinship, dismissing Govindan's claims of political nepotism.

Govindan, who has had a pivotal role in the district's politics, countered that the choice defied political ethics, asserting that seasoned seniority was overlooked. The internal turbulence comes as the election approaches, thrusting the district's party leadership into defensive mode.
