MTA Sues Trump Administration Over Withheld Subway Funding
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is suing the Trump administration to recover nearly $60 million withheld from New York's Second Avenue Subway project. The lawsuit claims the suspension was politically motivated, risking vital infrastructure projects amid disputes over federal funding allocations under the former president's administration.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has taken legal action against the Trump administration, seeking nearly $60 million that was allegedly withheld from the key Second Avenue Subway project in New York City. Filed in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, this lawsuit is a response to the administration's decision to suspend funds amidst last fall’s government shutdown.
The White House has not commented on the matter, while the Department of Transportation insists on ensuring responsible spending of taxpayer money, hinting at exploring all legal options. The Biden administration has since pledged $3.4 billion to support the project designed to benefit over 100,000 daily commuters by extending the Q line into East Harlem and Harlem with three new stations.
This lawsuit is part of a broader dispute involving infrastructure funding cuts during political standoffs. It highlights similar actions, such as the potential halting of $16 billion for the Hudson Tunnel Project following payment suspensions, alongside a case where the USDOT withdrew $1.2 billion intended for Chicago's Transit Authority. These projects are critical for repairing and expanding the nation's transit systems.
