An independent candidate from Tamil Nadu's Jolarpet Assembly constituency turned heads on Thursday by filing his nomination in an unusual manner. Mohan Raj, 26, son of Ramamoorthy from Sunnambukuttai, presented his Rs 10,000 deposit entirely in coins, neatly arranged in a basket. Accompanied by supporters, he submitted his papers to Election Officer Murugesan at the Natrampalli Taluk Office.

This distinctive action generated buzz among officials and onlookers, as statewide candidates continue to leverage unique strategies to stand out during the nomination phase ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections. Raj further affirmed his dedication to election laws by taking an oath on the Indian Constitution.

Simultaneously, election flying squads increased scrutiny on campaign activities. On Thursday, Tamil Nadu Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi and DMK MP Kanimozhi were inspected by officials while campaigning. These measures come as Tamil Nadu prepares for single-phase polling on April 23, with vote counting slated for May 4, following the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct.
