India took over the BRICS chairship on January 1, 2026, marking its term with a focus on fostering resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability. The government informed Parliament of this development on Thursday. The BRICS, initially comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, saw expansions in 2024 to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE, with Indonesia joining in 2025.
Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh stated that India is steering the Chairship with aligned priorities, aiming to strengthen trade, investment, and technology collaboration. However, India faces the challenge of carving out a unified stance on the ongoing West Asia conflict, involving several BRICS members directly.
As a significant global bloc, BRICS represents nearly half of the world's population and considerable shares of global GDP and trade. India's term emphasizes people-focused engagements, including the BRICS Youth Summit and Film Festival, while continuing economic discussions and business forums throughout Indian cities.
