Harivansh, a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha, has been elected unopposed as the Deputy Chairman for the third consecutive term. The motion to elect him was moved by Leader of the House J P Nadda and passed by a voice vote. His leadership has been hailed across political lines.
The election took place after Harivansh's term ended on April 9, with endorsements from various political leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge. Modi emphasized the confidence reposed in Harivansh by the House, recognizing his impactful leadership.
This marks the first instance of a nominated member being elected as Deputy Chairman. Opposition leaders, however, voiced concerns over limited opposition exposure, urging Harivansh to maintain democratic values. The Congress also raised issues regarding the long-vacant Deputy Speaker position in the Lok Sabha.
