The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has formally lodged a complaint against BJP candidate Papia Adhikari, accusing her of abusing the national flag during her election campaign in the Tollygunge Assembly constituency of south Kolkata.
According to Kohinoor Mazumdar, vice-president of the West Bengal Trinamool Chhatra Parishad and TMC spokesperson, Adhikari was spotted campaigning door-to-door with a 'dupatta' that displayed the Indian tricolour. Mazumdar alleged that she was wiping her face with it, an act he claims violates the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act of 1971. The complaint was submitted at the Netajinagar police station, urging for it to be treated as an FIR and for proper legal action to be taken against Adhikari.
Adhikari is challenging West Bengal cabinet minister Aroop Biswas of the TMC in the Tollygunge constituency. As of now, Adhikari has not commented on the accusations, and the police are currently examining the complaint.
