Governor Janet Mills of Maine, a prominent critic of President Donald Trump, has officially announced her withdrawal from the Senate race against Republican Senator Susan Collins. This move brings clarity to a critical campaign for Democrats, who are eager to secure a Senate majority in the upcoming November elections.
Mills, aged 77 and serving her second term as governor, cited a lack of financial resources as the primary reason for her decision to step aside. 'While I have the drive, passion, and experience, financial resources are essential for campaigns,' she explained in her statement.
With Mills out of the race, Graham Platner, a progressive candidate who has raised $3.25 million in his campaign's initial phase, emerges as the leading Democratic contender. The race in Maine is one of seven pivotal contests for controlling the Senate, which the Republicans currently hold with a 53-47 majority.
