Amidst rising political tensions, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the Punjab government to assure the safety of Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh and his family. The interim order emerged following Harbhajan Singh's recent defection from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
In the immediate wake of the politician's switch to the BJP alongside six other AAP MPs, the Punjab Police withdrew Singh's security cover. This move prompted a petition by Singh, with claims of his security being withdrawn arbitrarily and without due assessment.
Harbhajan Singh, a former cricketer turned politician who holds significant influence, experienced attacks on his residence. The court has mandated an assessment by May 12, acknowledging the current threats the MP and his family face amid political upheaval within Punjab.
