Amid Chinese Pressure, Taiwan's President Cement Ties with Eswatini
Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te arrived in Eswatini, defying diplomatic challenges posed by Chinese pressure, to strengthen ties. The visit, initially delayed due to revoked flight permits, aims to deepen economic and cultural relations with its only African ally, amid China's ongoing efforts to isolate Taiwan diplomatically.
Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te successfully landed in Eswatini after overcoming significant diplomatic obstacles, reportedly due to Chinese pressure, to reaffirm Taiwan's partnership with its sole African ally.
The trip faced initial setbacks when Seychelles, Mauritius, and Madagascar withdrew flight permits, underlining China's influence in isolating Taiwan. Nevertheless, Lai emphasized the enduring friendship between the two countries, focusing on strengthening economic and cultural ties.
China condemned Lai's visit, labeling it a 'stunt' and reiterating its assertion of Taiwan as part of its territory. Taiwan countered by asserting that the visit adhered to international diplomatic norms. This visit follows escalating tensions between China and Taiwan, as well as China's effort to limit Taiwan's diplomatic engagements.
