Neog, Assam's first woman finance minister, holds the record as the longest-serving female legislator since 2001. She switched from Congress to BJP in 2020.

Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog has made history by retaining her Golaghat assembly seat for the sixth consecutive time. In the recent elections, Neog defeated Bitupan Saikia, the Congress candidate, by a significant margin of 43,759 votes, securing a total of 1,02,212 votes against Saikia's 58,453.
Neog holds the distinction of being Assam’s first woman finance minister and is the longest-serving female legislator from Golaghat, a tenure beginning in 2001. Her political journey is marked by a notable shift when she left the Congress party in 2020 to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
In the BJP, Neog continued her significant political career by becoming the finance minister in Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s cabinet in 2021. Her victory reinforces her influential presence in Assam's political landscape.
