In a significant political shift, Debabrata Saikia, who served as the leader of opposition in the Assam assembly, has been unseated. Running under the Congress banner, he lost the Nazira seat to BJP's Mayur Borgohain by a margin of 46,701 votes, according to the latest data from the Election Commission.

The defeat marks a substantial change for the Nazira constituency, a region considered to be a longtime Saikia family bastion. Saikia, who had represented Nazira since 2011, won his last election with a narrow victory of fewer than 500 votes.

The Saikia dynasty's influence in Nazira, spearheaded previously by Debabrata's father, former Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia, and his mother Hemoprava, now faces a pivotal challenge and questions about the future political dynamics in Assam.
