In a decisive move reflecting the party's electoral success, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday allocated crucial ministerial portfolios within his newly formed BJP-led government. In a meeting with MLAs, Adhikari distributed key duties to five ministers, underscoring the BJP's commitment to swift administrative action.
The portfolio distribution comes on the heels of the BJP's significant victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, where the party secured a commanding 206 seats out of 294. This political upheaval reduced the incumbent Trinamool Congress to just 80 seats, signaling a dramatic realignment of the state's political dynamics.
Key ministerial roles were appointed to prominent BJP figures: Dilip Ghosh, a seasoned leader and former state BJP president, will oversee the Rural Development, Panchayats, and Animal Resources Department. Fashion designer-turned-politician Agnimitra Paul has taken charge of the Women and Child Welfare Department. Notably, she remains the only woman in the state Cabinet.
Ashok Kirtania, MLA from Bangaon Uttar, was entrusted with the Food Department, while Khudiram Tudu, representing tribal interests, will handle the Backward Class Welfare Department. Nisith Pramanik, a previous Union Minister of State, has been given the portfolios of North Bengal Development and Sports and Youth Welfare.
Adhikari's administration promptly rolled out major central schemes, including Ayushman Bharat and PM Jan Arogya Yojana, alongside new reforms aimed at enhancing governance. These include raising the age limit for government jobs, aligning with the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and boosting security measures at the state's borders.
The Chief Minister reaffirmed his dedication to 'good governance and transparency,' promising that while all welfare schemes will persist, stricter verification protocols will ensure their integrity. Adhikari's Cabinet voiced gratitude to voters for their support and iterated its commitment to state-wide development and security initiatives. The sense of renewal echoes through West Bengal, as the BJP-led government steps into its mandate with vigour and vision.
