EU Rejects Putin's Proposal: Schroeder Unfit for Negotiations
European governments have rejected Russian President Vladimir Putin's suggestion of appointing former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder as a mediator in future talks with Moscow concerning European security. EU ministers believe Schroeder's close ties with Russia undermine his ability to act impartially, and they stress the need for the EU to consolidate its stance before engaging in dialogue.
The European Union has rebuffed Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposal to involve former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder in negotiations regarding security in Europe. Putin's suggestion comes as he claims the conflict in Ukraine is nearing its end and offers to negotiate new security terms for the continent, with Schroeder as his preferred mediator.
EU foreign ministers, gathered in Brussels, were skeptical of Moscow's sincerity and dismissed the idea of Schroeder's involvement. Criticism was swift from officials, including EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, who cited Schroeder's ties with Russian interests as a conflict of interest. "It's clear why Putin wants him," said Kallas, highlighting Schroeder's compromised position.
Amid stalled U.S.-led talks and the ongoing conflict, some EU officials express a desire for direct discussions with Russia, provided an appropriate EU envoy is chosen. EU leaders emphasize increasing pressure on Russia, while Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger advocates for a stronger EU role in negotiation efforts, asserting that, "Russia won't decide it."
